Regional Revitalization: Become a Yuzu Farmer in Kitagawa Village
This opportunity is for individuals interested in becoming a regional revitalization volunteer (Chiiki Okoshi Kyoryokutai) in Kitagawa Village, Kochi Prefecture. The primary mission is to learn yuzu cultivation techniques through training with local farmers and to promote these production methods. The role also involves supporting activities that encourage migration and community exchange.
Kitagawa Village is one of the top yuzu-producing areas in Japan, known for exporting high-quality yuzu fruit to Europe. The village faces challenges due to a declining birthrate and an aging population, and is actively seeking outside talent to invigorate the community. The program offers a full three-year training period, during which host farmers will teach their specialized yuzu cultivation know-how.
Selected participants will enter into an annual business consignment contract with the village, renewable for up to three years. The annual consignment fee is up to 2,900,000 yen, paid monthly. The village will provide a residence for the volunteer, though utility costs are the individual's responsibility. A personal vehicle is essential for daily life in the area. The village also loans necessary equipment such as公用車 (official vehicles) and grass cutters. Participants must manage their own health insurance and national pension.
While Kitagawa Village lacks supermarkets and hospitals within its immediate borders, essential facilities are available within a 10-minute drive from the village office, as the area functions as a combined living sphere with five neighboring towns. Applicants must submit a resume and an essay on the theme 'My thoughts on local community and agriculture.'
