Historic Meiji-Era Merchant's Residence in Takaoka City
A notable feature specific to the Hokuriku region is the 'Wakunouchi' room, which boasts a double-height ceiling that showcases the substantial wooden beams engineered to support the house during heavy winter snowfall. The front south-facing section, built in the Meiji era, includes a Western-style reception room or 'yokan'. The grand tatami room with a clear view of the main garden was historically used by the prestigious family for dinner parties and important events. In recent years, the rooms on the second floor have been rented out to university students.
The back of the house, facing north, features two 'Kura' storage buildings built around the same time as the front house. The remaining structures at the back, including the roof over the Kura storages and the second-floor rooms, were added later during the Showa period. A small tea room beside the Kura storages is perfect for holding tea ceremonies. A wooden deck in front of the storages overlooks the mid-garden and served as a gathering place for family members.
