Dejima Omotemon Bridge: A Cantilever Steel Girder Bridge in Nagasaki
Dejima Omotemon Bridge is a cantilever steel girder bridge located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The bridge spans 38.5 meters with a width of 4.4 meters and was completed in 2017. It was constructed as part of the Dejima Restoration Project, which aims to fully restore Dejima by 2050. This bridge was built approximately 130 years after the original Dejima Omotemon Bridge, which once connected the opposite bank of Edo-machi to the Dejima Dutch Trading Post site.
The Dejima Dutch Trading Post site is a nationally designated historic site, which imposes restrictions on the installation of structures. To address this challenge, a special structural design was adopted where the substructure and foundation on the Edo-machi side support the entire load of the superstructure. This unique solution was achieved by utilizing Nagasaki's shipbuilding technology, allowing the bridge to have a pier on only one side without damaging the historic Dejima site.
