Interior Design Master Shigeru Uchida's Forest Retreat in Yamanakako
This property is a personal residence originally designed in 1978 by the renowned Japanese interior designer Shigeru Uchida, known for his work on Yohji Yamamoto boutiques and the Premier Hotel Mojiko. Built as a weekend home for a couple during the summer, the S-house was not published as a work at the time of completion and remained quietly nestled in the forest. When the current owners discovered the building, 46 years had passed, and the terrace and exterior walls were in a state of disrepair. The owners restored the beautiful exterior and balcony through cleaning, sanding, and painting.
The property consists of two volumes connected at the entrance: a living room on the left and a dining kitchen, bedroom, bath, and toilet on the right. The low-set windows with simple shoji screens evoke a Japanese-style room. The living room was designed for a low line of sight, with low sofas or floor cushions. A spacious balcony terrace extends beyond the living room's sliding glass door, creating a garden-like view of the forest. The dining area offers a closer view of the trees, with the frame making the scenery appear like a painting. The interior finish is basically plywood, with repairs aimed at restoring the original design. The spaces function as a backdrop to enhance the furniture, art, and the people living there.
This property is located in the Sanbikyugaoka Villa Area, Hirano, Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture. An exhibition of furniture designed by Uchida in the 1980s is being held at this property. Viewing events are scheduled for December 17, 18, 19, and 20, 2024, by reservation only.
