Suirōkaku: A Meiji-era Brick Aqueduct in Kyoto
This structure, known as the Suirōkaku, is a brick aqueduct located in Nanzenji Fukuchi-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is an arched bridge with a length of 93.17 meters, a width of 4.06 meters (with a water channel width of 2.42 meters), and a height of approximately 9 meters. It was constructed in 1890 (the 23rd year of the Meiji era).
Situated within the grounds of Nanzenji Temple, this brick aqueduct carries a branch of the Lake Biwa Canal, which diverges from the First Canal. The structure features 13 continuous brick arches that stand out against the surrounding greenery, making it a popular spot for commemorative photography within a historic landscape.
