Historic Farmhouse Transformed into Sonora Burger in Koriyama
This unique property in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a vacant farmhouse to a vibrant hamburger shop. The building, with an estimated construction date of around 150 years ago, served as a living educational material for research groups before its conversion. The process involved significant efforts, including a change of use from a farmhouse to a commercial shop, consultations with the Agricultural Committee for converting agricultural promotion areas into parking lots, demolition of dilapidated agricultural warehouses, bamboo grove maintenance, tree felling, internal renovation work, and parking lot construction.
Located at 54 Sekine, Nishida-machi Sanchome, Koriyama City, the shop named 'SONORABURGER' (Sonora Burger) opened on December 26, 2023. The name 'Sonora' originates from Italian, meaning to produce sound, convey sound, or resonate. The journey began with a consultation in June 2021, followed by a site survey and an explanatory meeting held on September 15, 2021, involving the Koriyama City Housing Policy Division, the Nishida Town Administrative Center, and members of the vacant house bank. Ownership transfer procedures were finally completed in November of the opening year, leading to the completion of repair work and the grand opening.
The revitalization of this akiya (vacant house) faced numerous legal and logistical hurdles, but through the cooperation of many people, new life has been breathed into the structure. The birth of this new shop in Nishida Town truly embodies the meaning of 'Sonora'—conveying a sound and a new breath of life to the community.
The surrounding area of Koriyama offers a blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. An interesting local fact is that Koriyama is known as a major logistics hub in the Tohoku region.
