A Renovated Kominka with Vaulted Ceilings and Beams in Kyoto
This property is a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house (kominka) located in the scenic area of Yagi-cho, Minamiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. The renovation, carried out by Nakagawa Juken Co., Ltd., focused on preserving the classic charm while introducing modern comforts and a spacious, open layout. A key feature is the transformation of three separate tatami rooms into one large, unified LDK (living-dining-kitchen) area. This space is dramatically enhanced by a vaulted ceiling that exposes the home's thick, structural beams, complemented by stylish lighting and a fan.
The renovation details, as provided by the agent, highlight several custom elements. The living room and entrance are connected by sliding doors (fusuma) featuring antique fittings, specifically sought out by the owner. These latticed doors create a magical effect at night when the living room is lit, allowing light to filter through the gaps. The entrance itself makes a bold statement with a vibrant vermilion-red painted wall on the wall facing the front door. This color was achieved after extensive consultation and trial and error with the owner, resulting in a perfect accent that complements the traditional ceiling and walls for a modern Japanese aesthetic. The old earthen floor area (doma) leading from the entrance was renovated into this modern entryway with a light brown woven bamboo ceiling and white walls, brightening the atmosphere.
Practical upgrades include a complete overhaul of the wet areas. The old-fashioned kitchen was relocated and replaced with a new face-to-face counter style kitchen. The bathroom and toilet were also renovated, successfully balancing the kominka atmosphere with contemporary livability. The exterior was significantly refreshed with repainted walls and enlarged windows. The front garden was cleared of trees to create a large parking space for more than five cars, which also greatly improved sunlight into the building.
