Affordable Rental Housing for Prospective Residents in Sarabetsu Village, Hokkaido
Sarabetu Village in Hokkaido offers a unique rental housing program designed to support individuals and families aiming to relocate and settle in the area. The "Settlement Promotion Housing" consists of two concrete block-constructed units, named Shin'ei 1 and Shin'ei 2, providing a practical and cost-effective entry point into life in this rural community. These properties are specifically intended for those currently living outside the village who wish to establish permanent residency and lack other suitable housing options, or for those seeking temporary residence for training purposes for six months or longer.
Each unit features a comfortable 1LDK layout with a total floor area of 61.25 square meters. The properties were originally built in 1979 (Showa 54) but underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2021 (Reiwa 3), ensuring modern living standards. Key equipment includes a system kitchen with an IH cooking hob and ventilation fan, an air conditioner designed for cold climates, a stove, a unit bath, a shower-equipped flush toilet, an independent washbasin, a hot water boiler, a disaster prevention wireless individual receiver, a shoe box, and ample storage space. A notable financial benefit is that the security deposit (敷金) is free. The monthly rent is set at a very affordable 17,900 yen. However, pets are not permitted in these residences.
It is important to note that occupancy is limited to a maximum of two years, during which time residents are expected to seek more permanent housing, such as public housing. Rent for the months of move-in and move-out is calculated on a pro-rata basis. As of February 17, 2026, both units are currently occupied. Interested parties must contact the Planning and Policy Division of the village office for inquiries and application procedures. During summer periods when a unit is vacant, viewings or image provision may be possible upon request to the same division.
