Frequently asked
- What is the difference between kominka and minka?
- Minka (民家) is the general term for traditional Japanese folk houses — wooden post-and-beam, tile or thatched roofs. Kominka (古民家) specifically means OLD minka, usually 50+ years old, often 100+. All kominka are minka but not all minka are kominka.
- Are traditional homes hard to maintain?
- They need more care than modern builds — periodic roof, beam, and tatami maintenance — but many systems are designed to be repairable rather than replaced. Renovation grants are available in many municipalities for foreign and domestic buyers.
