Miyagi is the economic and cultural capital of the Tohoku region, and its city of Sendai sets the tone: a tree-lined, well-planned city of one million people with a lively food and nightlife scene, a strong student population from seven universities, and enough urban energy to feel genuinely metropolitan without Tokyo's density and cost. The prefecture also contains Matsushima Bay — historically listed as one of Japan's three most scenic views (nihon sankei) — where 260 pine-covered islands of volcanic rock emerge from calm water in a composition that has drawn artists and poets since the 17th century. The haiku poet Matsuo Basho famously arrived here and, overwhelmed by the beauty, reportedly said nothing at all.
Getting There
The Tohoku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Sendai in 90 minutes — one of the most accessible major Tohoku cities from the capital. Sendai Airport has domestic connections and international flights to Seoul. The Shinkansen continues north to Aomori and south to Tokyo, making Sendai a natural hub for the entire Tohoku region. A car is recommended for exploring the coast and rural areas.
Daily Life
Sendai's Tanabata Matsuri (Star Festival, 7 August) is one of Japan's most visually spectacular festivals: the central shopping arcade disappears under enormous hanging paper decorations — some 3,000 of them, representing the tanabata legend of two stars meeting once a year across the Milky Way. The festival draws one million visitors in three days. Sendai is also Japan's beef tongue (gyutan) capital; the dish originated here and the city has elevated it into a culinary institution with its own restaurant district.

The prefecture's character is shaped by its dual identity as a regional hub and a coastal community. The Sanriku coastline, shared with Iwate, was significantly affected by the 2011 tsunami and earthquake; the rebuilt communities are resilient and proud. Inland, the Zao mountain range offers both ski resorts in winter and access to the extraordinary juhyo (snow monsters) — trees so heavily coated in wind-blown ice they look like alien sculptures. Sendai is one of the few Tohoku cities with an active international community and English-friendly services.
