Okayama claims the title of "Sunny Japan" with statistical support: the city records fewer annual hours of rain than almost anywhere else in the country, and the climate — mild, dry, and clear — has influenced both its agriculture and its temperament. Koraku-en, one of Japan's three traditionally great gardens (alongside Kairaku-en and Kenroku-en), occupies a river island in central Okayama with 300-year-old plantings of plum, cherry, maple, and pine arranged in a design that changes composition with every season and viewing angle. Directly across the river, Okayama Castle (the "Crow Castle" — black-lacquered tower, dramatic against the white castle of Himeji) completes a classical urban landscape that the city has the decency not to over-explain.
Getting There
Okayama is a Shinkansen city on the San'yo route — from Tokyo: 3.5 hours, from Osaka: 45 minutes, from Hiroshima: 25 minutes. The city is also the gateway to Shikoku, with the Seto Ohashi Bridge crossing the Inland Sea to Kagawa by JR (30 minutes). Okayama Airport has domestic connections. The Hakubi Line connects west to Tottori (San'in region). Kurashiki, Okayama's most visited city, is 15 minutes by local train.
Daily Life
Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter — white-walled storehouses along a willow-lined canal, built by merchant families in the 17th–19th centuries and now converted into galleries, craft shops, and cafes — is one of Japan's most atmospheric urban spaces and one of the few preserved merchant districts in the country. The Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, founded in 1930, has an extraordinary collection of Western art assembled by a local textile magnate and includes genuine works by El Greco, Monet, Matisse, and Picasso — the finest Western art collection in western Japan, sitting quietly in a converted grain store. The Bizen area east of Okayama is one of Japan's six traditional pottery kiln regions, producing the unglazed, flame-marked Bizen ware that has been made here continuously since the 10th century. Kojima, in southern Okayama, is Japan's denim capital — the industry settled here because of the area's skilled indigo-dyeing tradition, and Kojima's jeans street now draws fashion buyers from across Japan.
Festivals & Culture
Okayama's food culture centres on fruits: the prefecture produces Japan's finest white peaches (shiratori peach, a luxury item), Pione grapes, and Momotaro tomatoes — all grown in the sunny climate that defines the agricultural identity. The Kibi plain west of Okayama city is the landscape of the Momotaro legend (the peach boy who fights demons).
